What is a temporary total disability?
A temporary total disability is an injury suffered by an employee in the workplace that impairs their ability to carry out their normal job. This type of disability is covered under Workers Compensation Law in Florida. Employees who suffer a workplace injury could be eligible for temporary total disability (TTD) benefits. These benefits provide compensation for the impairment in earning ability caused by the injury. In Florida, the benefits are typically calculated on a weekly basis, up to a cap that is currently set at $836 per week. In order to qualify for TTD benefits, the employee must be unable to perform their regular duties due to the injury, and must be under the care of a doctor who certifies that the employee is temporarily unable to work. Benefits may continue until the employee is released to return to work or until the employee has reached the maximum medical improvement, as determined by the doctor. TTD benefits will not be paid while the employee is engaged in light duty activities, such as working a different job with the same employer. Also, these benefits are not available to employees who are able to work but are doing so at a reduced rate of pay. In this case, the employee may be eligible for other benefits, such as temporary partial disability. It is important for injured workers to work closely with their employers and their health care providers to ensure they are receiving all of the benefits for which they are entitled. Knowing the rules and regulations around temporary total disability in Florida is also essential for employees who wish to make sure they are properly compensated for injuries suffered in the workplace.
