Is it illegal to be fired due to whistle blowing?

In Virginia, it is generally illegal for an employer to fire an employee in retaliation for whistle blowing. This practice is known as wrongful termination and is illegal under multiple state and federal laws, including the Virginia Whistleblower Act. Under this act, an employer cannot take adverse action against an employee who reports a violation of the law or a breach of public safety to outside authorities. In addition, the law gives whistle blowers the right to receive compensation for their damages, including lost wages, emotional distress and legal expenses, if they are wrongfully terminated due to their whistle blowing. Furthermore, whistle blowers are given special protections under the Virginia Human Rights Act. This law states that employers cannot discriminate against or terminate an employee for opposing discrimination or harassment in the workplace. In addition, it is illegal for employers to retaliate against employees who oppose or report sexual or racial discrimination. In summary, it is illegal for employers to fire employees for whistle blowing in Virginia. Doing so is considered wrongful termination and punishable under both state and federal laws. Thus, any employee who believes they have been illegally fired should contact an experienced Virginia employment attorney.
