What is the adoption process like?
The adoption process in Washington can vary depending on the type of adoption, but there are generally some steps that remain constant. The first step is to submit an application to an adoption agency. The agency will gather information such as financial information, references, and home studies. After the application is accepted, the prospective adoptive parents will usually get a chance to meet with birth parents and learn more about the child’s history. The next step is to submit the necessary legal paperwork. This can include a petition for adoption, medical reports, and consent forms for the parents. Depending on the type of adoption, a court date may or may not be needed. If a court date is required, the prospective parents will appear in front of a judge to prove that the adoption is in the child’s best interest. Once the legal paperwork is approved and the adoption is approved, the parents are able to take custody of the child. The final step is to file the adoption order with the court. This is when the child officially becomes the property of the adoptive parents. Adoption is an involved process, but can be extremely rewarding. It is important to have a good understanding of the adoption laws in your state before beginning the process. Be sure to contact an experienced adoption attorney to help guide you through the process and ensure that your rights as an adoptive parent are protected.
