Are there any marketing or advertising restrictions for products targeted towards children?
Yes, there are a few restrictions on marketing and advertising products to children in California. Generally, under the California Consumer Legal Remedies Act (CLRA) it is illegal to target children with deceptive advertising, or to make any statement or representation that is false, deceptive, or misleading. This includes any advertising that fails to include necessary information about product ingredients, safety, or usage instructions. Additionally, all products must meet certain safety standards and may not be marketed to children under 12 if the products contain hazardous or toxic materials. Also, certain products may not be marketed to children if the manufacturer has certain scientific evidence that the product may cause harm to children. Finally, in California, it is illegal to advertise some products to children, such as firearms, alcohol, tobacco, electronic cigarettes, and gambling or lottery tickets. Many companies also have policies in place regarding advertising to children, such as not showing children under 16 in advertisements for products that are not intended for use by children.
