What is the difference between conventional and organic farming?

Conventional farming and organic farming are both methods of growing food, but there are important distinctions that differentiate them. Conventional farming uses synthetic chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides to control pests, weeds and diseases. This type of farming is more economical and efficient, but can lead to the overuse of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers, which can pollute waterways and damage the environment. Organic farming, on the other hand, is a system of growing food that avoids the use of synthetic chemicals. Instead, organic farmers use natural methods such as crop rotation and natural pest control to manage pests and weeds. Organic farmers are also very aware of the soil condition and work to maintain the health of their soil by using compost and mulch. Organic farming is more labor-intensive and requires more management and planning than conventional farming, but it is ultimately better for the environment and the soil. Organic foods are often more expensive because organic farmers are not able to use the same methods as large-scale conventional farmers. In Virginia, organic farmers must adhere to strict federal and state regulations in order to have their products labeled and certified as organic. This certification is expensive and must be renewed every year. On the other hand, conventional farming is not subject to the same regulations and is therefore less costly.
