What is the Clean Water Act and how does it relate to agriculture?
The Clean Water Act is a federal law in the United States that regulates water pollution, including agricultural runoff. The Act, established in 1972, gives the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) the authority to set and enforce national standards for various pollutants, such as sediments, pesticides, and nutrient runoff from farms. This legislation is integral for protecting the water quality of our rivers, streams, and lakes from agricultural pollutants. The Clean Water Act requires farmers who engage in activities that might contaminate their local or nearby waterways to apply for a permit from the EPA. Both agencies work to ensure that the water quality standards set by the EPA are met. The Clean Water Act is essential for protecting the environment and water quality from agricultural runoff. Farmers must adhere to the regulations set by the EPA, as well as local and state laws, to ensure that their activities are not contributing to water pollution.
