Are there any restrictions on the use of animal drugs in agriculture?
Yes, there are restrictions on the use of animal drugs in agriculture in the state of Washington. The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) regulates the use of animal drugs in agriculture. All animal drugs must be used in a manner that is consistent with the labeling and in compliance with state and federal laws. Animal drug use must also be consistent with best management practices and be documented. Any drug used in animal production must meet any of four requirements. It must be approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), WSDA must have approved the drug, its labeling, and the method of application; it must be compounded by a licensed veterinarian; or it must be an over-the-counter product labeled for use in livestock and poultry. The only time that animal drugs may be used without WSDA approval is when it is prescribed by a licensed veterinarian for therapeutic treatment. Any animal drugs that are not used according to the label or in compliance with state and federal laws are considered misbranded or adulterated and may subject producers to civil and criminal penalties. In addition, the WSDA enforces regulations for the sale, purchase, and use of medicated feeds and feeds containing additives or drug residues. Producers must use the feeds according to the label and ensure that the correct medication or drug has been added to the feed. Labeling must include the name of the drug and the dosage.
