How is airspace classification determined?
Airspace classification is a system of categorizing different areas of the sky for the purpose of assigning specific rules for aircraft flying in the respective areas. In California, airspace is classified according to regulations established by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The primary criteria used to determine the airspace classification are the navigational, air traffic control, and national security needs of the area. For example, an area that requires a high degree of control and traffic management to prevent collisions and ensure the safe navigation of aircraft will be assigned a higher classification than an area with less navigational risk. Generally, airspace is classified according to the types of activities that are allowed or prohibited in the respective areas. There are seven classes of airspace in California: Class A, B, C, D, E, G, and Warning Areas. Class A airspace, also known as the "army air forces" airspace, is used for the top-level navigation of military and commercial aircraft. Class B airspace is used for aircraft navigation in areas with high levels of controlled traffic and navigation requirements. Class C airspace is used for aircraft navigation in areas where communications are required for navigational purposes. Class D airspace is used for aircraft navigation in areas that have moderate levels of air traffic. Class E airspace is used for aircraft navigation in areas that don’t have an air traffic control service monitoring the airspace. Class G airspace is used for aircraft navigation in areas with the lowest levels of air traffic and navigational needs. Finally, Warning Areas are used to warn pilots of potentially hazardous areas to be avoided due to military activity or other hazardous conditions.
