What is the process for aircraft registration?

In California, aircraft registration is the process of identifying an aircraft and officially registering with the state. To register, one must submit an application to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This application must include the aircraft make and model, the serial number, and contact information for the registered owner, along with other identifying information. The registered owner must also complete a Certificate of Aircraft Registration. This form must include the aircraft make and model, the serial number, a description of the aircraft, and the name and address of the registered owner. After submitting the application and the Certificate of Aircraft Registration, the registered owner must pay the registration fee and taxes, if applicable. Once the registration process is complete, the state will issue a Certificate of Registration along with decals to be placed on the aircraft. The state may also require additional documentation, such as a Certificate of Airworthiness, in order to register an aircraft. This certificate will certify that the aircraft is safe to fly and has been inspected by an aviation official. Finally, aircraft owners are required to renew their registration each year. Failure to do so can result in penalties or even a revocation of the aircraft registration.
