What are the legal requirements for aircraft design and manufacture?
In Delaware, all aircraft design and manufacture must comply with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations and standards. The FAA requires that every aircraft component must meet certain performance and safety requirements before it can be approved. In addition, the FAA has rules concerning aircraft design, such as the shape and size of the wing, the engine type, the aircraft weight, and the type of materials used. The regulation of aircraft design and manufacture begins with the establishment of a type certificate. The type certificate is an FAA document that authorizes a design to be mass produced. An individual aircraft manufacturer must prove that its design meets the prescribed standards before the FAA grants the certificate. Once the type certificate is granted, the aircraft manufacturer must provide a thorough description of the design and performance of the aircraft. This includes detailed drawings, engineering calculations, and test results. The FAA also requires that the manufacturer update its design, if necessary, to meet changing safety regulations. Finally, all aircraft designs must be tested before they can be approved for public use. The FAA tests the aircraft in a variety of environments and conditions. It also reviews the aircraft’s airworthiness and its ability to operate without harm to people or property on the ground and in the air. Once the aircraft receives FAA certification, it is ready to be used by the public.
