What is the law for driving with a suspended license?

In Virginia, it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle with a suspended license. Driving with a suspended license in Virginia is considered a Class 1 misdemeanor, which can result in serious penalties. If you are caught driving with a suspended license, your vehicle may be impounded, you may be charged with a fine of up to $2,500, have your license suspended for an additional six months, and face jail time. Depending upon the severity of the offense, you can face up to 12 months of jail time or probation. If you are caught driving with a revoked license, the penalty is even more severe. Your vehicle may be impounded, you may be charged with a fine of up to $2,500, and your license will be revoked for an additional two years. Drivers that have had their licenses suspended or revoked for certain serious offenses (such as a DUI) may also be mandated to take an approved Driver Improvement Clinic. The fee for a Driver Improvement Course can range from $50 to $100. Additionally, if a person drives with a suspended or revoked license in Virginia and causes an accident that results in injury to another person, he or she may be charged with a felony, resulting in significantly greater fines and imprisonment. Virginia takes driving with a suspended license very seriously and has severe punishments in place for those who are caught driving illegally. It is important for all drivers to ensure that their license is valid before operating a motor vehicle.
