What are the laws about automotive modifications?
In South Carolina, when modifying an automobile, it is important to be aware of the laws. Any modifications made to an automobile must be approved by the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. It is illegal to modify a vehicle in a way that would affect the livability or safety of the vehicle. This includes any modifications that would change the performance of the vehicle. This includes modifying the engine, replacing the exhaust system, or removing emissions control equipment. Additionally, under no circumstance is it legal to tamper with the odometer of a vehicle, as this is illegal in South Carolina. In terms of cosmetic modifications, South Carolina law allows for a range of modifications, including changing the paint color or adding non-structural body components, such as spoilers and decals. Although most performance-related modifications are prohibited, it is legal to modify a vehicle’s suspension system, as long as the modification does not affect the safety of the vehicle. All modifications made to a vehicle must be approved by the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. In order to approve a modification, a technician from the DMV must inspect the vehicle and make sure it meets all safety requirements. Once the modification is approved, the owner must obtain a certificate of approval from the DMV before the modification can be legally used.
