What are the laws about driving a vehicle that is too large for the road?

In Virginia, it is illegal to drive a vehicle that is too large for the road. This includes vehicles that exceed the width, length, height or weight limits for the road. Depending on the size of the vehicle and the road, the limits may vary. If a vehicle exceeds the width limits for a road, it must be given an over width permit. These permits are issued by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and are valid for a specified period of time. In order to obtain a permit, the driver must provide evidence that their vehicle is in good mechanical condition and the trip is for a legitimate purpose. When it comes to length, the vehicle is not allowed to exceed 65 feet. This also includes any trailers that are attached to the vehicle. All vehicles over 45 feet must also display a high visibility warning device, such as a flag or light. In terms of height, the maximum legal limit is 13 feet and 6 inches. Any vehicle that exceeds this limit needs to obtain an over height permit from the VDOT. Similarly, any vehicle that exceeds the weight limits for the road must obtain an overweight permit from the VDOT. All vehicles must adhere to the size limits of the road they are travelling on. If a vehicle is too large for the road, the driver can be fined and the vehicle may be impounded. It is important for drivers to check the size limits of the road before driving.
