What are the requirements for aircraft maintenance personnel?

In California, professional aircraft mechanics must be certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In order to obtain FAA certification, technicians must have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least 18 months of on-the-job experience. They must also complete an FAA-approved Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) program at an FAA-approved school or university, pass an FAA exam, and fulfill any additional state or local requirements. Aircraft mechanics must also have a comprehensive knowledge of aircraft systems, from structural elements to components and mechanics. They must be capable of reading and interpreting technical manuals and documents, as well as having the skills necessary to repair, inspect, and maintain the aircraft in compliance with all manufacturer, federal, and local regulations. Aircraft maintenance personnel must also possess excellent organizational, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills. They must also be able to work independently and in a team environment. Additionally, they must have a valid driver’s license because they may need to drive a tow vehicle to move the aircraft from one location to another. Mechanics also need to have a current first aid and CPR certification to perform medical procedures in the event of an emergency.
