What is the process for obtaining an instrument rating?
In California, the process for obtaining an instrument rating (known as an IR) is outlined by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). An IR is a privileged certification that allows the holder to fly in certain weather conditions and with certain levels of visibility. The process for obtaining an IR in California is composed of four distinct phases. The first phase is to earn a Private Pilot Certificate, which requires applicants to have a minimum of 40 hours of flight time, including at least 20 hours of instruction with an FAA-certified instructor. Applicants are also required to pass a knowledge test, which covers aeronautical topics such as meteorology, navigational aids, aircraft systems, and flight maneuvers. The second phase is for the applicant to complete an additional 40 hours of flight time, including 10 hours of instrument flight experience. The third phase is to take a written knowledge test with the FAA. This exam focuses on instrument flying and instrument navigation operations, and covers topics such as air traffic control clearance and procedures, radio communication, airway navigation, and aircraft performance. After successfully passing the knowledge test, the applicant can proceed to the fourth phase. The fourth, and final, phase requires the applicant to take an FAA checkride, which is an in-flight practical evaluation. During the checkride, the applicant must demonstrate their mastery of flying an aircraft by instruments, communication with air traffic control, and other facets of instrument flight. After successfully completing the FAA checkride, the applicant will be granted an instrument rating.
