What is the process for obtaining an instrument rating?

In order to obtain an instrument rating in Utah, an individual must first obtain a private pilot certificate. This requires the applicant to complete a minimum of 40 hours of flight time, including at least 20 hours of flight with an instructor. Once the pilot has earned their private pilot certificate, they can begin training for an instrument rating. In order to qualify for an instrument rating, the pilot must have logged at least 50 hours of cross-country flights, of which 10 hours must have been in an aircraft. Other requirements include a total of 40 hours of instrument training, which includes 15 hours of flight instruction from an approved flight instructor, 3 hours of night flight, and 3 hours of instrument flight experience, also from an approved flight instructor. Once the pilot has obtained the necessary hours of training and flight experience, they must complete a FAA-administered written knowledge exam as well as a simulated instrument flight exam. The exams must be taken at an approved testing center and the pilot must score at least 70% on the written exam, as well as demonstrate proficiency during the flight exam. Once these requirements have been met and the pilot has successfully passed both exams, the FAA will issue an instrument rating, allowing the pilot to legally navigate aircraft using instruments.
