What is the process for obtaining a helicopter rating?
In order to obtain a helicopter rating in Utah, you must meet several requirements set forth by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). First, you must be at least 17 years of age and have a minimum of 40 hours of flight experience, including at least 20 hours of flight instruction in helicopters. Additionally, you must be able to read, speak, and understand English, and pass both a written and a practical test. When taking the written test, you must demonstrate a knowledge of the principles of helicopter flying, air traffic rules and regulations, and the use of navigation charts and other documents related to helicopter operation. The practical test will require you to demonstrate your knowledge through a series of maneuvers, including takeoff, landing, and hovering. When you are ready to take the tests, you must first contact an FAA examiner or an FAA Flight Standards Service office to obtain the appropriate application forms. You’ll also need to submit a logbook of your flight experience and provide documentation of your medical certification. Once you’ve completed the tests and submitted your application, you’ll receive your FAA helicopter rating which you’ll need to carry with you when you fly. With this rating, you’ll be able to fly legally in Utah, as long as you stay within the state’s laws and regulations.
