What is the process for obtaining a Commercial Pilot Certificate?
In Utah, to obtain a commercial pilot certificate, an individual must take a written exam and complete a number of flight hours. The individual must first get a student pilot certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). To obtain this certificate, the student must pass a physical exam and obtain a student pilot certificate from their local FAA Flight Standards District Office. Once an individual obtains their student pilot certificate, they may begin logging flight hours. To qualify for a commercial pilot certificate, an individual must have a minimum of 250 flight hours. These flight hours must include 100 hours of cross country flying, 50 hours of instrument, and 5 hours of night flying. After logging the necessary flight hours, an individual must pass a written exam, known as the Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) exam. Once the individual passes the written exam, they must take a check ride with an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE). The check ride is a practical test of the individual’s flying and technical abilities. Once the individual passes the check ride, the FAA will issue a Commercial Pilot Certificate. This certificate allows the holder to act as a pilot in command of an aircraft carrying paying passengers or cargo. The holder must also obey all aviation regulations and laws.
