What are the regulations regarding aircraft flight instruments?
Regulations regarding aircraft flight instruments vary from state to state. In Utah, all aircraft must be equipped with an airspeed indicator, attitude indicator, altitude indicator, compasses, gyroscopic instruments, and navigational instruments that meet the requirements of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Additionally, aircraft engines must be equipped with a tachometer and a manifold pressure gauge. The pilot must also be able to read these instruments accurately and interpret the information they provide. This includes being able to determine the aircraft speed, altitude, direction, and performance parameters of the aircraft. The pilot must also be able to identify when the aircraft is not operating in accordance with the approved flight manual. In order to ensure that aircraft are properly equipped and that the pilot is capable of interpreting the information provided by the instruments, the FAA conducts tests to ensure that pilots are aware of the instruments and knowledgeable of their use. If a pilot is not able to demonstrate that they understand the aircraft "Instruments and Equipment" section of their flight manual, they may be required to take a refresher course in order to become certified. By following the regulations set forth by the FAA, pilots are able to ensure the safety of their aircraft and passengers by properly using flight instruments and understanding the information they provide.
