What are the regulations regarding aircraft flight manuals?

Flight manuals are written documents that outline the regulations, procedures and recommended practices to properly operate an aircraft. In Washington, pilots are required to have a valid flight manual on board and follow the guidelines within it while operating the aircraft. Additionally, operators of aircraft registered in the state of Washington must have current flight manuals specific to their aircraft’s make and model on board at all times. These flight manuals must be approved by the FAA and must provide information covering all facets of aircraft operations and maintenance. This includes such details as emergency procedures, limits and placards, operating procedures, emergency equipment, aircraft performance and maintenance schedules. All the information must be kept up-to-date and reflect the specifics of the particular aircraft operated. Not only is it important for a pilot to be familiar with the information in the flight manual, but it is also important for a pilot to have access to it during flight. If there is an emergency during flight, the pilot needs to be able to quickly reference the emergency procedures outlined in the manual. Thus, in Washington, flight manuals must be readily accessible to and readable by all crew members.
