What are the laws regarding the use of cannabis in public places?
In Mississippi, the use of cannabis in public places is prohibited. This includes any place where the public may gather, such as parks, shopping malls, schools, and government buildings. Under the state’s criminal law, the possession, sale, and/or use of cannabis is a misdemeanor crime, punishable by a fine of up to $100 and/or up to 30 days in jail. It is also illegal to possess or use cannabis on public school property. The possession of marijuana in public carries increased penalties. Possession of 30 grams or less of cannabis is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine up to $250 and/or up to 90 days in jail. Possession of more than 30 grams is a felony, punishable by a fine up to $3,000 and/or up to 3 years in prison. The use of cannabis in public places creates a risk of public safety and property damage. This is why it is important to be aware of the laws that govern where and how cannabis can be used. It is essential to be mindful of the penalties for breaking those laws. Violation of any marijuana laws can lead to costly fines and even jail time.
