Are there restrictions on the types of cannabis products that can be legally sold?
Yes, there are restrictions on the types of cannabis products that can be legally sold in Virginia. According to the Virginia Board of Pharmaceuticals, only medical cannabis products are allowed to be sold. These products can include oils, tinctures, capsules, topical creams, and lozenges. Virginia has also enacted a law that allows for the legalities of production and sale of therapeutic hemp extracts, known as cannabidiol (CBD). The law requires that these products must be obtained from sources approved by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy and must be tested for quality and safety. The specific products allowed for sale are limited to those that are low in both THC (the compound in cannabis that creates the “high”) and CBD, and that are registered with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy. In addition, any products containing more than 0.3 percent THC must be labeled as such, and they cannot be sold or kept in a retail establishment. Lastly, no recreational cannabis products or edibles (such as cookies and brownies) containing cannabis are allowed to be sold in Virginia.
