Are there any restrictions on edibles and other cannabis products for medical purposes?

Yes, there are restrictions on edibles and other cannabis products for medical purposes in Virginia. The state’s Medical Cannabis law, enacted in April 2021, states that only THC-A and CBD products are permitted for medical use. These products must be dispensed by one of the state’s five licensed cannabis dispensaries and must be in the form of an oil, gel capsule, topical oil, or topical cream. Edibles are not allowed. Other regulations on cannabis products for medical use in Virginia include a strict labeling system to ensure a product’s identity, potency and origin. Medical cannabis must also be tested by a registered analytical laboratory to ensure its conformity with state regulations. Additionally, products must be tested to ensure that they are free from toxins and contaminants. To ensure that only those in need receive medical cannabis, the law requires patients to register with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy and be certified by a physician. Patients must also be at least 18 years old and have a qualifying medical condition, such as cancer, glaucoma, HIV or AIDS, or a chronic medical condition that causes severe pain, nausea, or seizures. To help ensure public safety, the law prohibits patients from possessing more than a 30-day supply of cannabis products for medical use at one time. Additionally, it also prohibits the sale or transfer of medical cannabis to anyone not certified by the state’s Board of Pharmacy.
