Can a debt collector call me after 9 p.m.?
In Washington, debt collectors are restricted from calling after 9 p.m. This is according to the Consumer Debt Defense Law. The law states that debt collectors may not make calls before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. local time in Washington. Calls made outside of these times are considered harassing or indecent and are not allowed. Additionally, debt collectors are not allowed to call you during inconvenient times. This includes times that are known to be too early or too late for a reasonable person. Debt collectors must also cease contacting you if you make a written request. This request must be sent in the form of a letter, email, or any other written method that can be tracked. Finally, debt collectors are not allowed to discuss your financial situation with anyone other than you or your attorney. Debt collectors are also restricted from making contact with you more than once a week, unless otherwise agreed upon. If a debt collector calls you after 9 p.m., you are encouraged to report them to the Washington State Consumer Protection Law. Doing so may help protect your rights as a consumer while also allowing you to resolve any debt-related issues.
