What is the scope of civil rights remedies?

The scope of civil rights remedies in Virginia state that individuals may bring suit or file a complaint in court to seek legal remedies for discrimination, harassment, or other civil rights violations. These remedies include injunctive relief, which is a court order to stop the offending behavior or policy; monetary damages, including back pay and compensatory damages; and attorney’s fees. The Virginia Code provides that civil rights remedies may also include reinstatement, promotion, or transfer of workers; payment of lost wages; or other forms of equitable relief. The remedies available for civil rights violations are limited to those provided by state or federal laws. In Virginia, rights protected by state law include the right to be free from discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, age, disability, maritalstatus, or sexual orientation. Federal laws provide additional protections including Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination in the workplace based on race, sex, religion, and other protected categories; the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA).
