What are the rights of individuals in regards to data protection?
In Washington, individuals have the right to have control over their data and the way it is used. This is known as data protection. Individuals also have the right to request the deletion of their personal data and to be informed when their data is as risk due to a data breach. Companies and organizations must also ensure that the personal data of individuals is stored securely and people must be made aware of this when their data is first collected. Lastly, individuals have the right to not have their data sold for marketing purposes, known as the ‘opt out’ of direct marketing. Companies and organizations are not allowed to use personal data for any purpose that the individual has not given express permission for. The rights of individuals in regards to data protection are important as they give individuals control over their data and help to ensure their personal data is secure and used appropriately.
