Companies and organizations must also ensure that the personal data of individuals is stored securely and people must be made aware of this when their data is first collected. Lastly, individuals have the right to not have their data sold for marketing purposes, known as the ‘opt out’ of direct marketing. Companies and organizations are not allowed to use personal data for any purpose that the individual has not given express permission for. The rights of individuals in regards to data protection are important as they give individuals control over their data and help to ensure their personal data is secure and used appropriately.
