What is a data subject access request?

A data subject access request is a legal right in Pennsylvania that someone has if they want to know what personal information an organization or other individual has about them. This law, known as the Data Security Law of Pennsylvania, was put in place to protect people from having their personal information misused or mishandled. When someone files a data subject access request, they are asking the organization or individual for access to their personal data, such as their name, address, Social Security number, or financial information. The organization must then provide the person with a copy of their personal information, usually within 30 to 45 days. The person filing the data subject access request can also ask for additional information clarifying how the organization has used their personal information, or why the organization collected it in the first place. If the organization hasn’t complied with Pennsylvania’s Data Security Law, the individual can take legal action. The Data Security Law of Pennsylvania is designed to protect the rights of individuals and ensure that their personal information is not misused or mishandled. By filing a data subject access request, people can be sure that their personal information is secure and that their rights are being protected.
