Can a debt collector contact me if I’ve made a payment arrangement?

Yes, a debt collector can contact you if you have made a payment arrangement in Washington. This is allowed under the Washington Collection Agency Act (WCAA). The WCAA states that once a payment arrangement has been agreed to, debt collectors are allowed to contact you to ensure you are meeting the terms of the arrangement. However, debt collectors are not allowed to call or contact you in any way that is harassing, oppressive, or abusive. They also may not use any false, deceptive, or misleading means to collect a debt, including misrepresenting the amount of the debt or calling you at inconvenient times. If you feel that a debt collector is not abiding by the WCAA or is using overly aggressive methods when attempting to collect a debt, you have the right to file a complaint with the Division of Consumer Services. You may also seek legal counsel to help protect your rights.
