What is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)?
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was enacted in 1990 by the U.S. Congress and is a federal civil rights law. The ADA prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in the areas of employment, public services, public accommodations, and telecommunications. Businesses must also make sure that their places of public accommodation are in compliance with the ADA, such as having ramps or special entrances for people with disabilities. Finally, the ADA requires telecommunications equipment such as phones, website interfaces, and other communications devices to be accessible to those with disabilities. By providing these accommodations, the ADA ensures that all individuals, with or without disabilities, are included in our society.
