What is a reasonable accommodation?

A reasonable accommodation is a change in the rules, policies, or way of providing services that allows a person with a disability to have access to the same opportunities as people without disabilities. This can include things like extra time to complete tests or assignments, assistive technology, and separate seating in a classroom. In Delaware, the state laws require businesses and employers to provide reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities, except when doing so would create an undue hardship on the employer or business. For example, if an employee has a visual disability, an employer may have to provide the employee with programs or software that can convert written documents into audio. Likewise, an employer may need to build an entrance ramp for a wheelchair user to access the workplace. The goal of providing reasonable accommodations is to ensure that individuals with disabilities have the same access to goods, services, and information as people without disabilities.
