What is a reasonable accommodation?
A reasonable accommodation is a modification or adjustment made to a job, the work environment, or the way things are usually done in order to help an individual with a disability participate in the workplace. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations for employees with disabilities, as long as the accommodation does not create an undue hardship on the employer. In New Mexico, reasonable accommodations can include making facilities accessible, providing assistive devices, assigning an aide, modifying job duties, allowing for flexible scheduling, or providing certain services. In addition, reasonable accommodations must also be provided for individuals who need special accommodations when taking a licensing exam or when applying for a job. For example, a person with a mobility impairment might need a wheelchair ramp to be able to access the exam room or a person with visual impairments might need extra time and/or reading materials in Braille. Reasonable accommodation is an important part of disability law in New Mexico. It is a way of making sure that people with disabilities are given the same opportunities as everyone else in the workplace and beyond. With reasonable accommodations, all individuals are given a chance to reach their full potential.
