What is a section 504 plan?

A Section 504 plan is a document created to ensure that students with disabilities receive accommodations, modifications, and services to help them access their learning environment. This document is based on Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which guarantees equal access to educational opportunities for students with disabilities. A Section 504 plan outlines the steps the school and parents will take to ensure that the student receives the necessary accommodations, modifications, and services. This can include modifications to classroom activities, more time for assignments and tests, support from a disability service provider, and any other accommodations that may be necessary. In Delaware, schools must provide an equal education to all students, regardless of their disability status. This includes providing a quality education that meets the student’s individual needs. Therefore, if a student requires specific accommodations, modifications, or services in order to be successful, the school must provide those services in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The plan created to provide these services is known as a Section 504 plan.
