What is an accommodation request?

An accommodation request is a form of communication used by people with disabilities who require special assistance in order to participate in education or employment activities. The request is used to ask for changes to their working or learning environment that would allow them to be successful. In New Mexico, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is the main legal document that is used to ensure people with disabilities are given reasonable accommodations in the education and workplace settings. An accommodation request is a way for a person with a disability to exercise their rights to equal access and opportunity. The most common forms of accommodation requests are related to physical, mental, or educational needs. For example, a person with a physical disability may require the use of a wheelchair, accessible furniture, or adapted equipment in order to complete their work. Someone with a mental health disability may need certain types of therapy or assistance with managing their emotions or stress. Educational accommodations may include extra time on tests, access to a private room during testing, or alternative testing methods. In New Mexico, accommodation requests must be made in writing and submitted to the appropriate person or institution, such as a school or employer. The request should include details regarding the disability and what type of assistance is needed. A qualified professional may also need to evaluate the request and provide written documentation of the need for the accommodation. If an accommodation request is approved, the person or institution must provide the necessary modifications in a timely manner.
