What is an accommodation request?
An accommodation request is a request for an adjustment to certain policies, procedures, or services in order to provide a disabled person with access to the same opportunities as someone without a disability. In North Carolina, this request typically involves changes to workplace environments, such as making buildings and other facilities accessible, providing assistive technology, providing interpreters, or making changes to the physical workspace. It can also involve making changes to workplace policies or procedures, such as allowing a person with a disability additional time to complete tasks, providing flexible schedules, or allowing the disabled person to work remotely. Accommodation requests can also involve additional services or resources, such as a sign language interpreter or a wheelchair accessible elevator. Generally, the request must be reasonable in order to be accepted, meaning it must not impose undue hardship on the employer or the disabled person. State and federal disability law requires employers to provide reasonable accommodation to disabled employees, and accommodation requests must be respected and addressed in a timely manner.
