What types of services are available for people with disabilities?
In South Carolina, people with disabilities are protected in various ways under the law. The South Carolina Disabilities Act gives people with disabilities the right to obtain services that will enable them to live independently and participate in their communities. Such services include protection from discrimination, reasonable accommodations, access to appropriate medical and support services, access to educational and training opportunities, and assistance with job placement and training. Access to services for people with disabilities in South Carolina is based upon the individual’s needs. The service system offers a range of options, depending on the specific needs and abilities of the person, and includes residential services, supported living programs, social and leisure activities, and counseling. To access such services, individuals must complete an assessment of their needs. Based on the assessment, recommendations for services are made and the individual has the right to receive the services they need. The South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs (DDSN) is the agency responsible for managing and overseeing services to individuals with disabilities in South Carolina. DDSN works with service providers, such as long-term care providers, to ensure individuals receive quality services in a safe and respectful environment. The South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs also provides assistance to individuals and families to help them access the services they need. In addition, the department provides information and resources about the rights of people with disabilities and about the various services and supports available in the state.
