Who is eligible for SSDI benefits?

In Virginia, individuals who suffer from a disability that limits their ability to work may be eligible to apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. To be eligible for SSDI, the applicant must meet certain criteria. The first requirement is that the individual must have worked at least five of the past 10 years in a job or jobs that were covered under the Social Security system. The applicant must have made enough contributions to the Social Security system in order for the eligibility requirements to be met. The second requirement for SSDI eligibility is that the individual must have a disability that is recognized in the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) list of qualifying disabilities. The SSA lists disabilities in the “Blue Book”. The disability must be severe enough to limit the applicant’s ability to work and must have prevents them from earning over a certain amount on a monthly basis according to the SSA guidelines. The third requirement is that the disability must be expected to last for at least 12 months or result in death. The disability also must prevent the applicant from doing any kind of gainful employment during this period. In addition to meeting the above requirements, applicants are also required to prove their medical condition and may be asked to take medical exams in order to receive SSDI benefits in Virginia.
