What is a Letter of Intent?

A Letter of Intent (LOI) is a document that outlines the intentions of an individual or family in regards to planning for the future of a person with disabilities. In California, a person with a disability or their family can prepare a Letter of Intent to ensure their wishes for health, housing, and financial care are known if they become unable to make decisions for themselves. An LOI is considered a binding legal document in California and should be kept in a secure location such as a bank safety deposit box. An LOI is important for outlining a person’s wishes for their future care, including specifying a guardian, planning for long-term care and health, and outlining financial plans. An LOI should include details about the individual’s preferences for their care, such as where they would like to live, any specific healthcare providers they would like to see, and how they would like their finances handled. It is important that an individual and their family make sure that an LOI is updated regularly to ensure that it reflects their current wishes and plans. Preparing an LOI can provide peace of mind to a person with a disability and their family that their wishes and plans for the future will be respected and honored, should they become unable to make decisions for themselves. An LOI is an important part of providing care for a person with disabilities and should always be taken seriously and kept up-to-date.
