What is an Advanced Medical Directive?
An Advanced Medical Directive, also known as a living will or advance healthcare directive, is a document that allows an individual to make decisions about their medical care and treatment before they are unable to communicate their wishes due to illness or injury. This document helps protect an individual’s right to choose their own medical treatment and will be followed by medical professionals in the event the individual can no longer make those decisions for themselves. In California, the Advanced Health Care Directive is a legally-binding document that allows an individual to appoint a healthcare agent who will make decisions on their behalf in the event they are unable to do so. It also allows the individual to express their wishes regarding specific medical treatments or procedures in case they are ever unable to provide that information to the medical team. It lays out the principles that will guide the care the individual receives, including their right to refuse medical treatments or medications. Ultimately, the Advanced Medical Directive serves as legal protection so that an individual’s medical decisions will be respected, even if they are unable to represent themselves.
