What rights do I have under the ADA?
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal civil rights law that grants individuals with disabilities the right to equal opportunity and access to public services and facilities. In Rhode Island, the ADA protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination in employment, public accommodations, transportation, and other areas of life. Under the ADA, employers are prohibited from discriminating against individuals with disabilities in the workplace. This may include refusing to hire, promotion, or termination of employment. Employers are also obligated to provide reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals, which can include anything from flexible work schedules, to the purchase or modification of equipment. Public accommodations are also covered under the ADA, and include businesses, parks, schools, and government facilities. Individuals with disabilities have a right to access these facilities and services without discrimination from retailers or service providers. Examples of reasonable modifications these entities may have to make include providing accessible entrance, providing aids and services, and making structural changes to some facilities. In addition, some transportation services are covered under the ADA, and must make reasonable modifications to accommodate individuals with disabilities. This includes providing wheelchair accessible service, providing specially equipped vehicles, and offering service for individuals with visual or hearing impairments. Finally, the ADA also requires state and local governments to provide individuals with disabilities access to government programs and services. This includes making reasonable modifications to policies, procedures, or practices that may exclude or limit access for individuals with disabilities. The ADA provides a wide range of rights and protections for individuals with disabilities in Rhode Island, and these rights should be respected.
