What is a DUI/DWI?

A DUI/DWI (Driving Under the Influence/Driving While Intoxicated) is a criminal offense in Pennsylvania. When a person is arrested and charged with this offense, they are accused of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance, such as marijuana or prescription drugs. This means that the person’s ability to drive was impaired due to the presence of a substance in their system. In the state of Pennsylvania, as in other states, DUI/DWI offenses are taken very seriously and can result in serious penalties. Depending on the details of the offense, these penalties may include jail time, fines, suspension or revocation of the driver’s license, and/or mandatory completion of a drug or alcohol treatment program. Additionally, a DUI/DWI conviction can result in an increase in vehicle insurance rates and difficulty obtaining future employment. To avoid an arrest for DUI/DWI, it is important for all drivers to never get behind the wheel after consuming any amount of alcohol or controlled substance. Drivers should also remember that it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle with a BAC (blood alcohol concentration) of .08 or higher. If a person is found to be driving with a BAC over the legal limit, they will be arrested and charged with a DUI/DWI.
