What is the alcohol education program?

The Alcohol Education Program (AEP) is a program in Virginia designed to reduce the incidence of Driving Under the Influence (DUI). The program requires individuals convicted of DUI to obtain an alcohol and drug education program approved and certified by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. The program consists of a minimum 30-hours of instruction that must be completed within one year of the violation. The program focuses on identifying and addressing the behaviors that lead to alcohol abuse and driving under the influence. The AEP provides an education and awareness program that helps individuals recognize their problem and also provide techniques to help reduce the risk of impaired driving. Some of the topics discussed during the AEP include the risks of alcohol and drug abuse, the effects of alcohol on the body, impaired driving laws, and the consequences of impaired driving. Participants also learn decision-making and problem-solving skills that can help them avoid impaired driving situations. Completion of the AEP can result in the reduction of a portion of the penalties associated with DUI. Individuals may also be eligible for a reduction in their insurance premium rates. The program also helps individuals build the skills they need to make better, safer decisions in the future. The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles evaluates the program based on data that demonstrates if the program is reducing incidents of DUI.
