What is the Americans with Disabilities Act?
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal law that protects people with disabilities from discrimination. The ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including education. In Washington, the ADA ensures that people with disabilities are not denied access to public or private educational programs or activities, and that those programs or activities are provided in the most integrated setting appropriate. Furthermore, the ADA requires that reasonable accommodations be provided for students with disabilities, such as curriculum modifications, additional time for exams and tests, and other forms of support. The ADA also requires schools to make reasonable modifications to policies, practices, and procedures as necessary to avoid discrimination against students with disabilities. This means that changes must be made to ensure that students with disabilities are provided with equal access to all educational programs, activities and services within the school system. Finally, the ADA mandates that all students be provided with the same educational opportunities regardless of disability, and that no student is discriminated against or excluded from participation in any school-related activity.
