Are employers required to provide employee health benefits?
In Idaho, employers are not required to provide employee health benefits. However, many employers do provide health benefits to their employees as a way of increasing morale and productivity. Health benefits can be in the form of medical, dental, and vision coverage; paid time off for medical visits; and more. Employers may also be required to provide health benefits if they are part of a collective bargaining agreement or a union contract. In addition, employers that employ more than 50 full-time employees may be subject to the Affordable Care Act’s employer mandate, which requires employers to provide certain health benefits. Employers that do not offer health benefits are not prohibited from doing so. Employers may choose to offer health benefits to their employees in order to attract and retain quality talent, increase productivity, and keep their employees healthy and satisfied. Generally, laws in Idaho do not require employers to provide health benefits, but employers have the right to offer them to their staff if they wish.
