What is the Federal Water Pollution Control Act?
The Federal Water Pollution Control Act, also known as the Clean Water Act, is a set of laws that the United States Congress enacted in 1972 to protect the quality of the nation’s water resources. This law was enacted to regulate the discharge of pollutants into bodies of water and to maintain and improve the condition of the natural environment. It set up a framework for the states to develop water quality standards and to ensure that the standards are met. The Clean Water Act is implemented through two programs: the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and the State Water Pollution Control Revolving Fund (SWPCRF). The NPDES program allows the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to issue permits to industries and other facilities that discharge pollutants into surface waters, such as rivers and lakes. Through the SWPCRF program, states are given funds to help finance water pollution control activities. These funds can be used to build and maintain wastewater treatment facilities, purchase land to protect wetlands, and fund other projects that help improve water quality. The Clean Water Act serves an important role in Washington state’s environmental protection. It helps to ensure that the waters in our state remain safe and clean for everyone to enjoy. The state also has additional water quality laws that address issues not covered by the Federal Water Pollution Control Act. In Washington, it is important to protect and conserve our water resources for our health, enjoyment, and economic prosperity.
