How much notice do I have to give my employer before taking FMLA leave?

When you need to take FMLA leave, you must give your employer at least 30 days advance notice when the leave is foreseeable (if the leave is not foreseeable, you must give notice as soon as possible, and not more than two days after the time you learn of the need for the leave). This notice must include the expected duration of the leave and any other relevant information your employer requires. In addition, your employer can require you to submit a certification from a health care provider that you need the leave for your serious health condition or to care for a family member with a serious health condition. Your employer must provide you with this form and information about how to complete it. If you do not provide a complete and sufficient certification, your employer can deny your request for leave.
