What do grandparents need to do to prove their relationship with a grandchild?

In order to prove a relationship with a grandchild, grandparents in Washington must meet certain criteria outlined in the Grandparents Rights Law. This law is in place to protect the rights of grandparents in Washington to maintain a close relationship with their grandchildren. If a grandparent is not able to prove a relationship with their grandchild, they must first petition the court in the county where the grandchild lives. They must have proof of their identity and provide evidence of how they are related to the grandchild. The court will then determine if the grandparent qualifies as a relative and if they should be granted visitation rights. In addition to providing evidence of their identity and how they are related to the grandchild, grandparents must also provide evidence to back up their claim. This includes proof of contact between the grandparent and grandchild, evidence demonstrating the grandparent’s willingness to provide support and care for the grandchild, and any other relevant information. If the court approves the petition, visitation rights will be granted and the grandparents may be able to spend time with their grandchild. This decision ultimately is made by the court and is based on the evidence provided as well as the best interests of the grandchild.
