What is human rights law?
Human rights law is a type of international law that protects people’s fundamental rights. It establishes legal standards to uphold human dignity and guarantee people’s freedoms. Human rights law is based on principles of equality, respect, and justice. It also values human life and puts an emphasis on human security. In the United States, human rights are protected by the Constitution as well as various laws and regulations. In South Carolina, the South Carolina Human Rights Act of 2005 is the main source of protection for human rights. This law prohibits discrimination and makes it illegal to use an individual’s race, gender, religion, national origin, age, disability, or other protected characteristic in decisions that affect their employment, housing, education, and public accommodations. The South Carolina Human Rights Commission is responsible for enforcing the state’s Human Rights Act. This commission investigates complaints and takes action against businesses and individuals found to be in violation of the law. The commission also educates citizens about their rights and creates programs to combat discrimination. Human rights law is essential to ensure that people are treated fairly and have access to equal opportunities. It helps protect individuals from discrimination and guarantees their fundamental rights. Human rights law is an important tool for ensuring that all people are treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their identity.
