What are the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is an international document that was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10th, 1948. It is the most translated document in the world, with translations in more than 500 different languages. It is the foundation of international law and has been ratified by all 193 member states of the United Nations. It outlines fundamental human rights that are to be universally protected and it serves as a common standard of achievement for all people and all nations. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights outlines 30 articles that cover a wide range of topics, including the right to life and liberty, freedom from torture and arbitrary detention, freedom of speech and opinion, the right to seek and impart information, the right to an education, the right to work, the right to an adequate standard of living, the right to be free from discrimination, and the right to participate in civil and political life. In California, human rights are protected by both state and federal law, including the California Constitution, the California Bill of Rights, the California Civil Rights Act, the California Fair Employment and Housing Act, the California Unruh Civil Rights Act, and the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. California also has a state Human Rights Commission which is responsible for investigating and resolving allegations of discrimination in areas such as employment, housing, and public accommodation.
