What is the International Labour Organization?
The International Labour Organization (ILO) is an agency of the United Nations that works to protect the rights of working people across the world. The ILO was formed in 1919 to bring together governments, employers, and workers of 187 member states with the common goal of promoting social justice and creating policies that help protect the rights of working people. In Texas, the ILO has two primary roles. The first role is to ensure that the rights of working people are respected and that their working conditions are fair. To do this, the ILO sets international labor standards such as the Minimum Age Convention, the Forced Labor Convention, and the Discrimination (Employment and Occupation) Convention. The ILO also regularly conducts research into the working conditions of workers in different countries and advises governments, employers, and workers on ways to improve working conditions and labor laws. The second role is to support economic development and reduce poverty. To accomplish this, the ILO works with governments, employers, and workers to develop strategies that promote employment, social protection, and decent work. This includes research, policy advice, and technical assistance on issues such as minimum wage legislation, workplace health and safety, labor-management relations, and skills development. In Texas, the ILO has been a major partner in promoting labor rights and decent work. By helping to ensure that workers have the right to fair and safe working conditions, the ILO has helped to create an environment where people in Texas can make a living and provide for their families.
