How are international treaties enforced?

International treaties are legally binding agreements between two or more countries that are enforced to ensure all involved parties uphold the agreed upon rights, rules, and responsibilities. These treaties are often established with the purpose of protecting human rights, like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In California, international treaties are enforced through a combination of domestic and international legal frameworks. On the domestic level, California state and federal laws and court decisions are used to ensure compliance with the treaty’s requirements. For example, the California legislature may pass a statute that implements the treaty’s provisions, or challenge a federal policy that violates the treaty. On the international level, international organizations like the United Nations or International Criminal Court may be used to ensure that parties are held accountable for violations. In order to ensure that a treaty is enforced, governments must be willing to participate in dispute resolution or mediation process if a dispute arises. Additionally, governments are responsible for providing accreditation to international bodies or organizations that will help facilitate enforcement of the treaty. Finally, when violations are brought to the attention of these organizations, sanctions and other penalties may be imposed if necessary.
